Axiros Expands Its TR-369/USP Offerings with the Latest AX USP 3.1.1 Release

Scalable, and Secure Connectivity for Millions of Devices with the Universal USP (TR-369) Controller

April 09, 2025 - MUNICH, GERMANY - Telecommunications software leader Axiros today announced its launch of version 3.1.1 of the AX USP Controller (and associated tools).

This latest update continues to push the boundaries of TR-369/USP technology, reinforcing Axiros’ commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions for remote management and monitoring.

AX USP 3.1.1 introduces significant enhancements, particularly in its built-in MQTT server, which now supports client certificate authentication as well as certificate whitelisting, ensuring greater security and flexibility for deployments that utilize MQTT MTP. While Axiros continues to recommend WebSocket MTP as the preferred Message Transfer Protocol due to its inherent advantages, AX USP 3.1.1 provides a robust alternative for those customers who are imposed to use MQTT.

Further strengthening its capabilities, AX USP 3.1.1 now includes improvements to its clustered MQTT client approach, also supporting MQTT version 3.1.1 in addition to MQTT version 5.0, ensuring comprehensive coverage for all possible MQTT deployments as described in the USP specification.

In an effort to enhance deployment options—particularly for containerized environments — AX USP 3.1.1 introduces native Prometheus support for telemetric. Starting with this release, the USP Controller includes an OpenMetrics HTTP endpoint, laying the groundwork for broader observability options and monitoring improvements in future updates.

Additional noteworthy enhancements in AX USP 3.1.1 include:

  • TLS client certificates support for the rhai-handler

  • Updated advertised USP version to 1.4

  • Improved MQTT server binding logic, now attempting to bind to all resolved socket addresses

  • Configurable NBI timeouts

  • Dependency upgrades and general performance optimizations

“While the changes may sound rather minor, the addition of Prometheus support, vastly improved MQTT capabilities and new TLS client certificate features open up a plethora of new deployment options. We’re very excited to see how customers are going to use these new possibilities to further push the boundaries of what is possible with USP”, said Daniel Egger, Product Owner of AX USP and Program Stream Lead for Data modelling in the Broadband Forum.

Axiros AX USP supports millions of concurrent USP Agents connected via WebSocket or MQTT MTP in a single process. The Controller was developed from scratch in a memory-safe language for safety and speed. It supports all features specified in the latest TR-369 specification and most features currently defined in the specification process. AX USP interfaces seamlessly with all current and future Axiros products, thereby providing a seamless upgrade path for existing installations.
